A New President of the United Tutorials of New Hope!
They came, they ate, they listened, they voted. And when the ballots were tallied, the 2015 President of the United Tutorials of New Hope was Demoblican Paul Staats! On April 16th, Mrs. Libert's Public Speaking students once again conducted the traditional persuasion exercise known as the "mock presidential election."
From its humble beginnings in 2004, the election has grown into a much anticipated NHT community-wide activity featuring real life campaigning for both candidates 1-2 weeks in advance of voting day. This year was no exception as signs, posters, sloganeering, stickers and bribes started appearing around New Hope touting Paul Staats and Matt Bell. Sophisticated social media communications promoted the two candidates online.
In recent years, the most popular means of political promotion has been the "meet, greet and eat" event. This idea was originated in 2008 by candidate Molly Wanek who organized "Breakfast with Molly" on election day. Since then, each year's candidates and their campaign teams have hosted progressively more elaborate feasts to attract voters and engage in persuasive conversation about the issues. This year Demoblican Paul Staats organized "Pizza with Paul" and Republicrat Matt Bell hosted "Lunch Chat with Matt" which featured homemade waffles, bacon & sausages, fresh berries, juice & ice tea (served with little umbrellas) and bell-shaped cookies w/a frosting "Vote 4 Bell" message.
The campaigning was lots of fun, but the election was decided ultimately on the candidates' prepared speeches to the assembly. Voters were instructed by Mrs. Libert to evaluate the candidates on their speaking skills & passion. Staats and Bell gave their best orations to date and were well-matched . . . Staats won by only 5 votes out of nearly 60 cast! Congratulations to both of you on your excellent presentations!
