Mini-tutorial in ART

The goal of New Hope’s art tutorials is to teach them the elements and principles of design, to have them experiment with many techniques of visual expression, and to help them develop expressive intent in their work.

The student or family looking for a shorter-term commitment to a comprehensive art program will find the 12-week Mini Tutorial is expressly designed to meet such a need.

The following syllabus provides an overview of the Mini Tutorial projects week-to-week.

 

Syllabus for LEXINGTON Mini Tutorial In Art (Fall 2011)

Concept: Explore a wide variety of art techniques over the course of 12 weeks.  Students will learn from several art mediums: pencil, charcoal, watercolor, colored pencil, painting and collage.

Week One: Introduction

* talk about different art forms, techniques, and styles of art.

* learn how to see the elements of shape

Week Two: Introduce Sketchbook

* explore line technique exercises to build drawing skills.

* discover positive and negative shapes and contour drawing.

Week Three: Shading, value, light sources

* draw and shade cubes and spheres.

* move on to shading more complex objects

Week Four: Pencil and Charcoal Projects

* work with mini still-life

*practice shading value in grey tones

Week Five: Introduction to Color (watercolor, colored pencils)

*practice shading values in color

* find references for watercolor or color pencil project

Week Six: Introduction to Composition and Color Schemes

* continue to develop color project

Week Seven: Color

* begin acrylic painting project

* review: observation skills, drawing from life, mixing colors

Week Eight: Acrylic Painting (continued)

Week Nine: Drawing Skills / Other Materials

* create a representational collage

* discuss realism and abstraction in art

Week Ten: Collage (continued)

* choose type of collage project (representational or abstract)

Week Eleven: Greeting Card Illustrations

* design/illustrate greeting cards (birthday, Christmas, other)

* finalize any unfinished projects

Week Twelve: Greeting Cards (continued)

* finish card project, using a combination of techniques learned in previous weeks
